What is an Instagram scheduler?
An Instagram scheduler lets you prepare a post in advance and have it published automatically at a chosen time, through Instagram’s official publishing API. Instead of posting from your phone at the moment you are free, you plan a week or a month in one sitting.
knit.bio’s planner goes beyond a queue. It shows how your grid will actually look, suggests the hours your own followers are most active, lets you arm an auto-DM before the post exists, and can hold a sponsored post until the brand approves it.
How to schedule an Instagram post
Connect Instagram and open Plan
Connect a Business or Creator account with Meta login, then open Plan in the dashboard. The page has four tabs: Grid, Queue, Calendar and Ideas.
Start a post
Click New post and choose Post (one photo), Reel (one video), Carousel (2 to 10 photos) or Story. Upload your media and write a caption of up to 2,200 characters, with live hashtag and @mention counters and a preview of how it will look.
Pick a time
Choose a date and time, tap a best-time chip (the hours your followers are most active, from your own data) or a next-free-slot chip, or leave it blank to keep an untimed draft.
Let it publish, or manage the queue
It publishes on time by itself. The Queue lists everything upcoming by urgency and lets you edit, duplicate, publish now or delete. A failed post shows Instagram’s error inline and sends you a notification while it can still be rescued.
What is in the planner
Grid preview
See your feed as it will look: upcoming posts flow straight into the ones already published, and you drag an upcoming tile to reorder it. Reordering only changes the preview; it never moves posts already on Instagram.
Calendar with weekly slots
A Week view and a Month view. Drag any upcoming post to a new time or day. Set the times you like to post once (for example Mon, Wed and Fri at 9 AM), then fill your queue: it shows the assignment and nothing is scheduled until you confirm.
Best times from your own data
Instagram reports when followers are online by hour of day, not by weekday, so knit.bio suggests hours from your own audience and spreads the days evenly. With no data yet it starts from an early-evening default and says so.
Ideas board and AI caption drafts
Capture ideas, save dates worth posting around in the next 45 days, and start from questions your audience keeps asking. Draft writes a first caption in your voice, with a placeholder wherever it does not know a fact (30 drafts a month on Free, more on paid plans). Nothing is saved or published for you.
First comment and labels
Post your hashtags or link as a first comment the moment the post goes live, so the caption stays clean. Add up to five private labels (Sponsored, Educational, Launch week) to any post and filter the Grid, Queue and Calendar by them.
Auto-DM funnels and brand approval
Arm a comment-to-DM automation before the post exists, so the very first comment already gets its DM. For sponsored posts, send the brand a private approval link: an unapproved post is held, not published. See comment-to-DM automation.
A built-in photo editor
Crop to Instagram’s feed ratios, rotate, flip and straighten, and apply one of 16 filters or fine sliders (brightness, contrast, warmth, saturation and more) without leaving the composer. The original file is never touched.
Earnings on the post’s row
A post you published from the planner keeps a row in the Queue with a link to it on Instagram and to its Post Report, and what it earned once that is tracked. See Instagram analytics.

Limits and what it can’t do
Knowing the edges is part of choosing a tool. Several of these are Instagram’s rules, not ours.
- Publishing goes through Instagram’s official API, which only serves Business and Creator accounts and caps API-published posts at 100 per rolling 24 hours (a carousel counts once). Most creators never come near it.
- Instagram’s API accepts JPEG photos up to 8 MB with a feed ratio between 4:5 and 1.91:1, Reels from 3 seconds to 15 minutes, and Story videos up to 60 seconds. knit.bio converts photos to JPEG and checks video length before it schedules, and holds a post if the daily allowance is used up. These are Meta’s limits as documented in September 2026 and can change.
- Stories have no comment thread, so they cannot carry a first comment.
- Reordering the Grid changes the planner’s preview only. Instagram provides no way for an app to rearrange posts that are already published.
- The Ideas board’s “Coming up” list is a fixed calendar of holidays, shopping days and awareness days. Instagram does not share what is trending, so nothing there claims to know.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free Instagram post scheduler?
Yes. The knit.bio Free plan is free forever and lets you plan 10 posts ahead at a time (drafts and scheduled posts that have not gone out yet; the count drops as they publish). Starter and up have no limit on upcoming posts. Posts, Reels, carousels and Stories all publish automatically.
Can I schedule Instagram Reels and Stories, not just photos?
Yes. The composer supports single-photo posts, Reels, carousels of 2 to 10 photos and Stories. A Reel that is still processing on Instagram’s side shows “Publishing…” briefly and goes live automatically when processing finishes.
Does the scheduler post automatically, or send me a reminder?
It publishes automatically through Instagram’s official API, so you do not need to open the app. If a post fails, you are notified straight away with the reason, and you can publish it now from the Queue.
How does knit.bio know the best time to post?
From your own followers. Instagram reports the hours your followers are online, and knit.bio uses that data, in your time zone, for the best-time chips and for the Best time to post chart in Analytics. Accounts with too little activity see a default and a note saying so.
Can I get a brand’s approval before a sponsored post goes live?
Yes. Switch on “Needs the brand’s approval” and you get a private link that needs no login. The brand sees the post exactly as it will publish and taps Approve or Request changes. An unapproved post is held, not sent, and publishes on the next pass after approval.
What is the difference between this and Later or Planoly?
Later and Planoly are social schedulers that cover several platforms. knit.bio’s planner is Instagram-only, and sits inside a toolkit with comment-to-DM automation, analytics, a DM inbox and brand-deal tools.
