Instagram comment-to-DM automation
Comment-to-DM automation sends an Instagram DM to anyone who comments a keyword you chose, and can post a public reply under their comment. knit.bio does it through Instagram’s official API, on every plan, including a free one.

What is Instagram comment-to-DM automation?
Comment-to-DM automation watches the comments on your posts and Reels. When someone comments the keyword you picked (say “GUIDE”), it sends them a direct message with your link, offer or product, and can reply publicly under their comment so other people know to ask too. It uses Instagram’s private replies, which allow one DM per comment, sent within seven days of the comment.
The same rule engine also handles Story replies and mentions, and DMs that contain a keyword. On Pro and Max it can also answer comments under your ads (dark posts). You choose the trigger, how the comment has to match (contains a keyword, exactly a keyword, or any comment), and what to send.
How to set up a comment-to-DM automation
Connect your Instagram
Log in with Meta from Settings → Instagram. You need an Instagram Business or Creator account; switching from a personal account is free in the Instagram app.
Pick the trigger
Choose where it fires: a post, a Reel, a Story reply or mention, or an incoming DM. Leave it on any post, or pin it to one of your last 20 posts so a keyword campaign only fires on that content.
Set the keyword and how it matches
Choose “contains keyword” (a comment that includes any of your comma-separated words), “exact match”, or “any comment”. Contains is a case-insensitive text match that also works inside longer words, so GUIDE also fires on “guidelines”. Use exact match when that matters.
Write the DM and the public reply
Write the message, attach a link, a product or a product carousel, and set the short public reply that appears under the comment (it defaults to “Check your inbox! 📩”).
Turn it on and watch it work
New automations are created switched on. Each card shows how many times it fired and, once the DM contains a link, its click-through rate. On Pro and Max, Rewind sends the DM to everyone who commented your keyword in the last seven days, so a keyword you launch late still reaches earlier commenters.

Free on every plan. A Story mention carries no text, so it only fires an “any comment” rule. Ad (dark post) triggers are on Pro and Max.
A public reply under the comment
A short public comment goes under the trigger comment, so other followers see that a DM is on its way and ask for it too.
Links, products and carousels
Attach a custom link, a product from your store, or a carousel of up to 10 products that people can tap through and buy inside the DM. Product options are on Pro and Max; see selling in DMs.
Email capture and a follower gate
From Starter, ask for an email address inside the DM before the link is released. The follower gate is honor-system: Instagram has no way to verify a follow, so it asks the person to follow and then tap “Unlocked”. See collecting emails from Instagram.
Tags for segments
Tag everyone who matches, for example interest:beginner_fitness. Later you can filter the Instagram tab of Submissions by tag, or make another automation fire only for people who carry it.
Paced, not blasted
Slow-down mode is on by default and spreads automated DMs across the hour instead of sending them in a burst, because Instagram’s anti-spam systems watch for accounts that message faster than a person could. Nothing is dropped: when a post goes viral the rest wait in a queue.
Answer the same comment questions automatically
Comment Concierge handles the comments that are not keywords. It reads every comment on your posts, sorts buying questions into five kinds (sizing, shipping, pricing, buying and availability) and tags each commenter as a warm lead on every plan. On Pro and Max it can also send your own DM for each kind, and answer repeated questions from an FAQ you saved (500 answers a month on Pro, unlimited on Max).
It is built to fail toward silence. It is off until you switch it on, it ignores statements, and every comment gets at most one answer. Your own keyword automations always run first. An optional AI step, off by default, can only choose one of the answers you wrote; it never writes a new one.
Is comment-to-DM automation safe for my Instagram account?
knit.bio connects through Instagram’s official API using Meta login. It never asks for your password and it does not scrape or log in as you. Instagram’s messaging rules still apply: an account can DM someone within 24 hours of their last message, and a comment can be answered once, privately, within seven days.

Limits and what it can’t do
Knowing the edges is part of choosing a tool. Several of these are Instagram’s rules, not ours.
- Instagram only lets an app DM a person within 24 hours of their last message to you. Replies to comments use a separate rule: one private reply per comment, within seven days.
- The Instagram tools need a Business or Creator account. Instagram does not offer messaging automation for personal accounts.
- The follower gate runs on the honor system, because Instagram provides no way to verify that someone followed you.
- Keyword matching is a plain text match and cannot tell what a comment means, so a question written in unusual words may not match. Comment Concierge covers common buying questions.
- Only comments on your own posts, Reels, Stories and ads can trigger it. There is no way to DM people who have not commented or messaged you.

Does Instagram allow comment-to-DM automation?

Can it reply to people who commented before I set it up?
Yes, for the last seven days. On Pro and Max, Rewind scans your recent posts and sends the DM to commenters who matched but were missed because the automation was not live yet. Instagram does not allow a private reply to a comment older than seven days.
