Sell products inside Instagram DMs

knit.bio can send a product, or a carousel of up to 10, inside an Instagram DM. The follower taps a tile, pays at your real store checkout, and a digital file is delivered back into the same conversation. Every order is traced to the automation and contact that started it. Product cards are on Pro and Max, with 0% platform fees.

Free plan, no card needed. Instagram tools work with a Business or Creator account.

What does selling in Instagram DMs mean?

Most Instagram sales conversations happen in DMs: someone comments “PRICE” or asks how to order. Selling in DMs means answering with the product itself instead of a link to a page they have to find, so the path from comment to checkout is one tap.

With knit.bio, a comment-to-DM automation can attach a Product or a Product carousel. Tapping a tile opens the same checkout your link-in-bio store already uses, with the payment method you connected. The purchase is then linked back to the conversation it came from, so you can see what your DMs earn.

How to sell products in Instagram DMs

  1. Connect a payment method and add products

Add products to your knit.bio store (see link in bio with a store) and connect your own payment account in Settings. The same connection powers your store and your DMs.

  2. Build the automation

In the Auto-DM builder, set “Link to send” to Product or Product carousel and pick what to sell. The options appear once your Instagram account is linked to a knit.bio page. See comment-to-DM automation.

  3. That is it

Every sale from that automation is attributed and delivered automatically. There is no separate switch. Prices and product details are read fresh each time a DM is sent, so editing a price in your store updates every automation that uses it.

What happens when someone buys

A carousel they can browse

Up to 10 products in one DM. The follower taps a tile and checks out without leaving the conversation flow.

Your real checkout, your money

Tiles open the same checkout page your store uses, with your own connected payment account. knit.bio takes 0% platform fee on every plan; your payment processor charges its own fees.

Orders traced to the source

As soon as the buyer pays, the order is stamped with which Instagram automation and which contact it came from. Nothing to turn on. On Pro and Max, Post Report then shows what each post earned. See Instagram analytics.

Digital files back in the thread

For a digital product, the file is sent into the same DM the moment payment is confirmed, on top of the usual download page and email, so a buyer who checked their email first still gets it either way.

Manual delivery for services

For anything you would rather deliver yourself (a service, a custom order), set the product’s delivery to manual. The buyer still gets a confirmation and you follow up personally.

Early-access drops to superfans

Pro and Max can message their ranked superfans and attach one store product as an early-access drop, sent as its own message after your note. Anyone outside Instagram’s 24-hour window is reported back by name.

Limits and what it can’t do

Knowing the edges is part of choosing a tool. Several of these are Instagram’s rules, not ours.

  • Product and Product carousel links are on Pro and Max, and need your Instagram account to be linked to a knit.bio page. The store holds 10 products on Pro and is unlimited on Max.
  • Attribution needs a real checkout (Stripe or Razorpay connected). A product whose only buy option is a link you pasted yourself, such as UPI, PayPal.me or a custom URL, still sends fine, but a sale made that way cannot be linked back to the conversation.
  • Instagram limits a carousel tile’s title to 80 characters and allows up to 10 tiles, so long product names are trimmed. Product cards are sent as a message, so they follow Instagram’s messaging rules, including the 24-hour window for follow-ups.
  • A Free or Starter plan can still send links; the product and carousel options are the Pro feature.
  • Order attribution shows what DM links earned. Sales that happen elsewhere with no tracked link in between cannot be traced by any tool.

Frequently asked questions

Can you sell products directly in Instagram DMs?

Yes. With knit.bio, a comment-to-DM automation can send a product or a carousel of up to 10. The follower taps a tile, pays at your real store checkout, and a digital file is delivered back into the same DM thread. The order is linked to the automation and contact that started it.

How does a follower buy from a DM?

They comment your keyword, receive a DM with the product or carousel, tap a tile to open your checkout, and pay with the method you connected. For a digital product the file arrives in the DM as soon as payment is confirmed, and also on the download page and by email.

Does knit.bio take a cut of DM sales?

No. knit.bio charges 0% platform fee on every plan. You connect your own payment account and the money goes straight to you. Your payment processor charges its own fees.

Which plan do I need to sell in DMs?

Product cards and carousels in DMs are on Pro and Max. Pro includes a store with 10 products; Max is unlimited. The Free and Starter plans can send a plain link in a DM.

Can I tell which post or automation made a sale?

Yes, for sales through a knit.bio checkout. The order is stamped with the Instagram automation and contact it came from, and on Pro and Max Post Report shows what each post earned, including revenue per 1,000 people reached.

Can I sell with UPI or PayPal.me links?

You can send those links in a DM, but a sale made that way cannot be linked back to the conversation, because there is no checkout page in the loop to do the linking. Connect Stripe or Razorpay for attributed sales and in-thread delivery.
