How to Sell Products Directly Inside Instagram DMs

The follower asking "how much?" in your comments is one extra tap away from buying, if the next thing that happens is a product card in their DMs instead of a link they have to go find themselves.

How to Sell Products Directly Inside Instagram DMs

Someone comments "how much is this?" under a product post, gets a DM back, and the conversation usually dies right there — not because they weren't interested, but because "here's a link, go to my bio, find the product, then check out" is four steps of friction stacked on top of what was, a second ago, real buying intent. The version that actually converts skips straight from "interested" to "buying," inside the same conversation.

What a product carousel in a DM actually is

Instead of a plain text reply with a link, an automation can send a genuine browsable carousel — real product cards, image and price included, that someone can scroll through and tap straight into checkout, without leaving the DM thread to go hunting for a link. It's built the same way a comment-to-DM automation is built: pick the trigger (a comment keyword, a story reply, an incoming DM), and instead of a single link, choose one or more products from your own store as the reply.

Why "your own checkout" is the actual point

A lot of DM-automation tools stop at "send a link" and hand the buyer off to a separate storefront, a separate checkout, sometimes a separate fee structure entirely. Selling through your own store means the sale happens on your own checkout, under your own payment setup, at your own 0% platform fee — not a percentage carved out by a third-party commerce layer bolted onto the DM tool. The follower never leaves a conversation they were already in to go complete a purchase somewhere else.

How the purchase gets credited back to the DM

A real concern with any "buy from a DM" flow is attribution — did that sale actually come from the automation, or would it have happened anyway? Each product link sent this way carries a signed token that identifies exactly which conversation it came from, verified again at the moment an order is actually placed. That closes an obvious gap: a copied link shouldn't be able to credit a sale to the wrong person's DM, and a sale that really did originate from a specific automation should show up as exactly that in your numbers, not get lost in undifferentiated "store" revenue.

What happens after the purchase

The moment an order completes, delivery happens back in the same thread — a digital file, a confirmation, whatever the product requires — instead of routing the buyer through a separate email they might not check for days. The entire loop, from "how much is this?" to a completed, delivered purchase, can happen without the buyer ever leaving Instagram.

Where this fits with the rest of your automations

A product carousel is one more reply type inside the same automation builder you'd use for any comment-to-DM flow — the trigger logic (keyword match, follower gate, capture email) all works identically whether the reply is a link, a file, or a product carousel. If you haven't built a comment-to-DM automation before, our guide to turning comments into DMs covers the basics this builds directly on top of.

Getting started

  1. Make sure your store has at least one product ready to sell.
  2. Build an automation, and instead of a plain link, choose "Product" (or select multiple for a carousel) as the reply.
  3. Test it yourself first — comment your own trigger keyword and confirm the carousel and checkout both work end to end.
