How to Run an Instagram Giveaway That Doesn't Attract Freebie Hunters
Most giveaways spike followers, then lose them. Run one with comment-to-DM entry, clear rules and a relevant prize, then measure whether the new followers stayed.
An Instagram giveaway is the fastest way to add followers and the fastest way to add the wrong ones. Give away a phone and thousands of people who love free phones will follow you for a week, then quietly leave. A well-designed giveaway does the opposite: it attracts people who actually want what you do, captures how to reach them and leaves you with an audience that stays. Here's how to run one, with entry by comment-to-DM.
Start with the rules of the platform
Instagram has promotion guidelines for giveaways and contests, and they're not optional. In general they expect you to be responsible for the lawfulness of the promotion (official rules, eligibility and any local requirements), to include a release of Instagram from any liability, to say clearly that the promotion isn't sponsored, endorsed or administered by Instagram, and to avoid asking people to tag content inaccurately (tagging people who aren't in a photo, for example). Guidelines change, and local laws differ on prizes and sweepstakes, so read Instagram's current promotion guidelines and check your local rules before you post. This isn't legal advice.
Design a giveaway that attracts the right people
- Pick a prize only your audience would want. A bundle of your own products, a session with you or a tool your niche uses filters for real interest. A generic gadget attracts everyone.
- Make entry take a small, relevant action. Commenting a keyword is enough. Asking people to tag five friends fills your comments with noise.
- Keep it short. Three to seven days keeps urgency high and the admin small.
- Write the rules down. Who's eligible (age, countries), when it ends, how the winner is chosen and how they'll be contacted. Put them on a page and link them.
Set up entry with comment-to-DM
- Announce it on one post or Reel with the keyword ("Comment ENTER to join").
- Build an automation in IG Suite: trigger on Post or Reel, pin it to the giveaway post, and match the keyword. The DM confirms the entry and links to your rules.
- Tag every entrant. Add a tag such as giveaway-october under Extra rules so you can find, filter and export entrants later on the Instagram tab of Submissions.
- Capture an email (Pro). Turning on Capture email asks each entrant for an address before the DM finishes, which is how a giveaway becomes a list. Only email them beyond the giveaway if your rules said you would.
- Catch early entries (Pro). If people started commenting before the automation went live, Rewind queues DMs for everyone who commented the keyword in the last seven days.
The free plan runs one active automation, which is enough for a single giveaway. Email capture and Rewind need Pro. See 30 comment keywords and DM templates for wording.
About "follow to enter"
Many giveaways require entrants to follow you. Be honest about what a tool can do here: Instagram has no way for any tool to verify that a specific person follows you, so IG Suite's follower gate is honor-system (it asks the person to follow and then tap "Unlocked"). If following is a rule, check the winner yourself before you announce them.
Keep the comments clean
Giveaway posts attract spam like nothing else. Turn on Comment Shield's Essentials bundle so bot links and scam comments are hidden while the giveaway runs, and use Ad shield if you promote the post. Add your own domain and any promo code to the allowlist so nothing you post is caught. Check the Activity tab afterwards to see what was hidden. Our post on stopping comment spam for good has the details.
Pick and announce the winner fairly
- Filter the Instagram tab by your giveaway tag, and export it to CSV or Excel.
- Choose the winner randomly (a spreadsheet's random function works) and note how you did it.
- Check the winner meets your rules, including any follow requirement.
- Announce the winner publicly and contact them promptly. Reach them inside Instagram's 24-hour messaging window if they've messaged you, or by email if you captured one. See the 24-hour rule.
Measure whether the followers stayed
The real result of a giveaway shows up two to four weeks later, not on the last day. Instagram doesn't report unfollows, so IG Suite works it out from your daily numbers: gross new follows minus the net change is your implied unfollows, and retention is how much of what you gained stuck. A growth spike that doesn't stick often points at a giveaway that attracted low-intent followers. Our guide to tracking follower churn safely explains how to read it.
Follow up while people still care
- Thank everyone who entered with a Story, and give them a small consolation such as a discount code.
- Segment by tag. Entrants who also asked about a product are your warmest audience.
- Turn the list into a relationship. See how to turn Instagram DMs into an email list.
Common giveaway mistakes
- An irrelevant prize. The bigger and more generic, the worse the followers.
- Vague rules. Unclear rules lead to disputes and, sometimes, legal trouble.
- Emailing everyone without consent. Entering a giveaway isn't the same as agreeing to marketing emails unless your rules said so.
- Not measuring retention. A spike you never check is a vanity number.
