How to Send a Mass DM on Instagram (What's Actually Allowed in 2026)
You can't cold-blast your followers, but you can reach people who messaged you recently, plus your email list. What Instagram allows and how broadcasts work.
Sooner or later every creator with something to announce asks the same question: how do I send a DM to all my followers at once? The honest answer is that you can't, and any tool that promises it is either misleading you or putting your account at risk. But there are legitimate ways to reach a lot of people quickly, and one of them is probably better than a mass DM would have been.
Short answer: Instagram doesn't let tools message followers who haven't contacted you. You can reach people who messaged you in the last 24 hours, people who commented (with one private reply each), followers who joined a broadcast channel, and anyone on an email list you own. A broadcast tool combines the first and last of these.
Why you can't message every follower
Instagram limits messaging on its official API to conversations the other person started, to keep DMs from becoming a spam channel. The rule is the 24-hour messaging window: after someone messages you, you can message them back for 24 hours. There's no official route around it. Services that promise to "DM all your followers" either drive a bot through your login, which can get your account restricted (see what Meta actually allows), or only reach people who've already contacted you.
Four legitimate ways to reach a big audience
- Get people into DMs on purpose. A comment-to-DM keyword ("comment LIST") or a Story prompt ("reply LAUNCH") makes people message you first, which opens a window. It's permission-based, and it works for a specific announcement.
- Instagram's own broadcast channels. A native one-to-many feature where followers choose to join and you post updates to them. It's a channel people opt into, not a DM to everyone.
- A DM broadcast to recent chatters. A tool can send one message to everyone from your chosen lists who messaged you recently.
- Email. The one channel with no window. Everyone who gave you an address can be reached any time, on a platform you control.
How IG Suite's Broadcast works
Broadcast lives in the Audience section. You write one message and send it to the people you already have a relationship with:
- Pick your lists. Page subscribers, form respondents, Instagram contacts (everyone who's messaged you), store customers and your three Superfans groups: Inner circle, Regulars and Warming up. Anyone in several lists is counted, and reached, once.
- Each person is reached the way that works for them. By email if they left an address, by Instagram DM if they messaged you in the last 22 hours, or both. The two-hour margin keeps a queued DM from expiring before it's sent, and a count shows how many people just missed the cutoff so you know who to email instead.
- Some people are always left out. Anyone who unsubscribed, bounced or is tagged as spam or a brand inquiry is excluded, and the summary tells you how many and why.
- Every DM ends with a STOP line. Anyone who replies STOP gets a confirmation and is left out of every future broadcast DM.
- Emails go through your own account. You connect Resend or SendGrid, so mail comes from your domain and your sender reputation stays yours. Each email carries an unsubscribe link and the one-click header Gmail and Yahoo require, plus your name and postal address in the footer.
- Check before you send. A checklist flags mistyped tokens, a button with no link, wording that trips spam filters and subjects that get cut off on phones. "Send me a test" emails a copy to your own inbox.
- Send now or schedule. Up to 60 days ahead. Who receives it is decided when it goes out, so anyone who unsubscribes in between is left out. You can watch it send, stop it mid-way, and afterwards see who got it, who clicked and who unsubscribed.
What a good broadcast message looks like
A DM broadcast should read like a note from you, not a newsletter. Keep it to two or three lines, say why you're writing and give one action. For example:
Hi {{first_name}}, the [product] you asked about is live today. Here's the link: [link]. Reply if you have any questions.
{{first_name}} becomes each person's first name, or "there" when there isn't one, and IG Suite adds the STOP line to every DM for you. For the email version, lead with the same single action, put the product card and a button in the body, and write a subject line that says what's inside instead of teasing it. Use the preview and the test email to see how it reads on a phone before you send.
Limits worth knowing
- Drafting and test emails are free. Sending a broadcast needs Pro or Max.
- Size caps. Pro can email up to 1,000 people per broadcast and Max up to 10,000, and the Instagram DM part is capped at 500. If a list is bigger, narrow it to people who joined in the last N days and send in more than one go.
- The DM only reaches people who messaged you recently. That's the rule, not a limitation of the tool.
Build an audience you can actually message
- Make replying easy. "Reply YES and I'll send the details" turns a passive follower into a person inside a window.
- Announce with a keyword. Every commenter who triggers a comment-to-DM automation becomes a contact. See 30 comment keywords and DM templates.
- Collect emails inside DMs. Capture email (Pro) asks for an address before releasing your link. Read how to turn Instagram DMs into an email list.
- Reach your best people first. A Superfans group can be the audience on its own. See how to find and reward your superfans.
What not to do
- Don't use tools that ask for your Instagram password to "message all followers".
- Don't send unrelated promotions to people who messaged you about something else.
- Don't ignore STOP. Honouring opt-outs protects your account and your list.
- Don't email people who never gave you an address, or who asked not to hear from you.
Frequently asked questions
Can I DM everyone who commented on a post?
You can send each commenter one private reply, within a limited time after the comment. That's how comment-to-DM works. It isn't a way to message them again later.
What about Instagram's broadcast channels?
They're a separate native feature where followers opt in. They complement DMs and email but don't replace either.
Is email really better than a mass DM?
For reach and control, yes. There's no 24-hour window, no algorithm deciding who sees it and no platform that can cut you off from the list.
